Accessibility
A site you can use however you browse
If something on these pages gets in your way, tell us and we will get you the information another way, then fix the page.
The standard we build to
The site aims at Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. That is a target we test against, not a certificate anyone has issued.
What that means on these pages
- Body text is at least 16 pixels and every word is checked for contrast against what is actually behind it, at phone width and desktop width, to a ratio of 4.5 to 1 or better.
- Every form field has a label tied to it, and an error is shown beside the field it belongs to.
- The menu, the forms and the question lists all work from the keyboard, with a visible focus ring, and a skip link jumps past the menu.
- Pictures carry a description of what is in them; the decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the page stops animating.
- Pages work at 200% zoom and at a phone’s width without scrolling sideways.
Help from your own browser
The old site carried a few tips worth keeping. Ctrl and the plus or minus key (Command on a Mac) zooms any page. Windows has high-contrast themes under Settings, and on a Mac the Display settings sit under Accessibility. Firefox and Safari both have a reader view that strips a page to its text. For free training on assistive technology, Hadley runs courses.
Report a problem
Call (615) 277-5678, weekdays 9 to 5, or use the form on the contact page. Say which page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you use. We will answer the question first and fix the page after.
Questions
Accessibility, answered
Which accessibility standard does this website follow?
It aims at Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, published by the World Wide Web Consortium. Contrast, labels, keyboard use, zoom and reduced motion are tested as the pages are built. That is a target we test against, not a certification.
How do I report an accessibility problem on the site?
Call (615) 277-5678 on a weekday between 9 and 5, or send the form on the contact page. Say which page, what you were trying to do and the browser or assistive technology you use. You get the information first and the page is fixed after.
Can I make the text on this site bigger?
Yes. Hold Ctrl, or Command on a Mac, and press the plus key to zoom in, or raise the default text size in your browser’s settings. The pages are built to work at 200% zoom and at a phone’s width without scrolling sideways.
Does the website work with a screen reader?
It is built to. Every form field has a label tied to it, errors are announced beside the field, pictures carry a description of what is in them, and a skip link at the top jumps past the menu straight to the page’s content.
