Room by room
A basement or a slab. The NWFA says solid wood shouldn’t go below grade; engineered wood can, and so can rigid-core vinyl such as Mohawk’s SolidTech R Select, which is rated on, above or below grade.
A bathroom or a laundry. Porcelain, with water absorption of 0.5% or less under the tile industry’s definition, or a vinyl plank sold as waterproof. Ordinary laminate is the one to leave out of a wet room.
Bedrooms and the bonus room upstairs. Carpet, for the quiet and the warmth underfoot, on a firm cushion that suits the pile.
An entry hall with a dog in the house. Laminate or luxury vinyl with a pet warranty in writing; Mohawk’s RevWood and SolidTech both carry one.
The whole main floor in wood. Hardwood, solid where the house allows it, so it can be sanded and finished again later.
Where the old categories went
The old site split the floors into fourteen pages. Area rugs and carpet tile are on the carpet page now; vinyl, waterproof and linoleum on luxury vinyl; glass tile, natural stone and solid surface on tile and stone. Every old link lands on the page that sells it.
Questions
Choosing a floor, answered
What is the best flooring for a basement?
Engineered wood or a rigid-core vinyl. The NWFA says solid hardwood should not be installed below grade, while engineered can go above, on or below it, and Mohawk rates SolidTech R Select vinyl for on, above or below grade, over wood or concrete.
What flooring is waterproof?
Porcelain tile and most rigid-core luxury vinyl, plus a few laminates sold as waterproof. The tile industry defines porcelain by water absorption of 0.5% or less; Mohawk calls SolidTech 100% waterproof; RevWood Plus has a waterproof surface and water-tight joints, in Mohawk’s words.
What is the best flooring for a house with dogs?
A floor whose maker puts pets in the warranty. Mohawk gives SolidTech R Select vinyl a lifetime All Pet stain warranty and a 15-year pet scratch warranty, SmartStrand carpet a lifetime All Pet stain warranty, and Shaw promises to replace Pet Perfect carpet a pet stains.
Do you sell area rugs and carpet tile?
Yes. Both were on the old site’s product list and are sold alongside wall-to-wall carpet; the carpet page covers them now. Carpet tile is also part of the commercial work, where Aladdin Commercial is one of the lines, in offices, classrooms and shops.
