What laminate is made of

The North American Laminate Flooring Association says a laminate floor’s core must be wood based, high- or medium-density fiberboard, and counts fiberboard as high density above 800 kg per cubic meter. A NALFA-certified floor has been sent to a third-party lab for testing; look for the mark on the box.

Laminate and water

Ordinary laminate and a wet floor don’t mix. NALFA’s own FAQ says it isn’t suited to rooms with a lot of moisture, bathrooms among them, unless the maker says the product is waterproof. Some now do. Mohawk says RevWood has “superior waterproof performance,” and that the WetProtect on RevWood Plus makes a waterproof surface with water-tight joints, backed by what it calls a lifetime surface and subfloor warranty.

A tree for the floor

Mohawk says every square foot of its RevWood laminate helps plant trees through its partnership with One Tree Planted, a program it wrote about in 2025. That is Mohawk’s program; buying RevWood here is how you take part in it.

How it goes down

Laminate clicks together and floats over the subfloor, the click-lock method the old site described. The subfloor still has to be flat, and the measure is where that gets checked.

Questions

Laminate flooring, answered

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

Ordinary laminate is not, but some lines are. NALFA says laminate is not suited to rooms with excessive moisture unless its maker says it is waterproof. Mohawk says RevWood has superior waterproof performance and RevWood Plus a waterproof surface with water-tight joints.

What is laminate flooring made of?

A wood-based fiberboard core under a printed layer and a hard wear surface. The North American Laminate Flooring Association requires the core to be wood based, high- or medium-density fiberboard, and counts it as high density above 800 kilograms per cubic meter.

Can laminate flooring go in a bathroom?

Only one its maker sells as waterproof. NALFA’s own FAQ names bathrooms among the moist rooms where laminate is not suitable unless the product says otherwise. For a bathroom, waterproof laminate such as RevWood Plus, rigid-core vinyl or porcelain are the choices.

What does NALFA certified mean on laminate?

That the floor was tested by an independent lab. NALFA says manufacturers begin certification by submitting products to a qualified third-party lab for testing against its standards. Look for the mark on the box or ask at the showroom which lines carry it.

What is Mohawk RevWood?

Mohawk’s wood-look laminate. Mohawk says RevWood offers superior waterproof performance, pet stain protection and fade resistance, and RevWood Plus adds WetProtect, with a lifetime surface and subfloor warranty. Mohawk also says each square foot helps plant trees through One Tree Planted.
